During the holiday season, maybe you're not into the TRADITIONAL Christmas movies like "It's a Wonderful Life" or "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". If you're looking for an "alternative" choice of movies, but you're still wanting something "Christmas-ey", then consider our movie list here! Some of these may not be considered "Christmas Movies", but each of these have scenes that take place on or around Christmas.


The Addams Family (1991)

The opening scene of this film finds the Addams Family about to dump "something" onto a group of Christmas carolers. We can only assume that it's something "unpleasant".

All Is Bright (2013)

While out on parole, Dennis reluctantly takes a job selling Christmas trees with his old buddy Rene in order to make enough money to buy his estranged daughter the piano she's always wanted.

Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007)

Much of the film takes place around Christmas time. The chipmunks are found from a tree that was cut down in their forest, which was brought to Los Angeles. Once they end up at Dave's house, he finds that not only can these chipmunks speak, but they also have a hidden musical talent.

Bad Santa (2003)

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

One evening, an elderly woman tells her granddaughter a bedtime story of where snow comes from, by telling her the story of a young man named Edward.

Eight Crazy Nights (2002)

Davey Stone, with the help of Whitey Duvall, remembers the joys of the holiday season in the eight days leading up to Hanukkah and Christmas.

Ernest Saves Christmas (1988)

Santa Claus is looking for a replacement so he can retire, and has his eye on an actor in the Orlando area. Ernest helps him as he searches for his successor.

Friday After Next (2002)

Stoner buddies Craig and Day-Day start new jobs as security guards on Christmas Eve after a robber dressed as Santa robs their house and ruins their Christmas party plans.

Ghostbusters II (1989)

The entire film is set during the month of December during the Christmas season in New York City. Even though very little mentions of Christmas take place during the film, Christmas decorations can be seen throughout various scenes. The film's climax takes place on New Year's Eve.

Gremlins (1984)

An inventor finds a "mogwai" in an old Chinese gift shop and brings him home as a gift for his son for Christmas. However, while caring for this creature, there are three important rules to follow. Breaking one of those rules could mean big trouble!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

What could be more magical than Christmastime at Hogwart's? During some Christmas scenes of this film, Harry, Ron, and Hermione exchange gifts for the first time.

The Ice Harvest (2005)

 
A seemingly perfect crime on Christmas Eve spirals out of control.

Iron Man 3 (2013)

 
In Iron man 3, Christmas decorations and Christmas music can be seen and heard throughout various scenes during the entire film. In one scene, JARVIS, Tony Stark's computerized assistant, even has his own stocking hanging by the chimney.

Jurassic World (2015)

The opening scene of this film finds Claire's nephews, Gray and Zach, leaving home to spend time with her. Gray and Zach are leaving a snowy area while "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" plays in the background, which leads us to assume this film takes place sometime during the holiday season.

Krampus (2015)

A boy who has a bad Christmas ends up accidentally summoning a festive demon to his family home.

Less Than Zero (1987)

A college freshman returns home at Christmas time to find all his high school friends take drugs.

Lethal Weapon (1987)

A mismatched pair of L.A.P.D. detectives battle a group of drug runners during the holiday season.

The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

A tale about Samantha Kane, an amnesiac housewife whos 'cover' is blown when she is recognized playing Mrs. Claus in the local Christmas parade.

Mean Girls (2004)

Part of this film takes place during the holiday season, and includes a scene where the main characters enter a talent show and dance to "Jingle Bell Rock".

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

 
The Griswold's decide to stay home this holiday season, and have their families visit THEM for a change. Decorating the house and having a "Good Old-fashioned Griswold Family Christmas" is Clark's only goal, except he runs over many obstacles along the way.

The Night Before (2015)

On Christmas eve, three lifelong friends spend the night in New York City looking for the Holy Grail of Christmas parties.

Office Christmas Party (2016)

The Princess Bride (1987)

Even though it's never mentioned in the film, a Santa Claus decoration on the closet door in the grandson's room suggests that the film's frame story is set during or around Christmas time.

Reindeer Games (2000)

An ex-con fakes his way into a woman's arms only to find himself the unwilling mastermind of a Christmas Eve casino heist.

Scrooged (1988)

A cynical television programming executive produces a showing of "A Christmas Carol" which is to air LIVE on Christmas Eve night. During production, his life begins to mirror the story he's producing.

Silent Night, Zombie Night (2009)

 
One week before Christmas, a viral outbreak turns the citizens of Los Angeles into the walking dead.

Star Trek: Generations (1994)

Even though there is no sign of Christmas in space, this film does contain one Christmas scene which Captain Picard experiences while trapped in The Nexus.

Ted (2012)

In the opening scenes of this film, a young boy's wish at Christmas time brings his stuffed bear to life and they grow up together.
